USA teen Harris Wolobah died from eating spicy chip as part of social media challenge
He was found unresponsive by police who were called to his home and taken to hospital where he died.
The cause of death was listed as cardiopulmonary arrest “in the context of recent ingestion of a food substance with a high concentration of capsaicin.”
The report also noted that the teenager had an enlarged heart and a congenital heart defect.
Texas-based manufacturer Paqui asked retailers to stop selling the individually wrapped chips and warned that they were for adults only.
The One Chip Challenge chip sold for about US$10 (US$15) and was packaged in a sealed foil bag enclosed in a coffin-shaped cardboard box.
The packaging warns that the chip is made for “the vengeful pleasure of intense heat and pain”, is intended for adults and should be kept away from children.
The challenge was to eat it and then not drink or eat anything else for as long as possible.
Lois Walloba told NBC10 Boston that she was called to the school by a nurse and that her son told him that a classmate had given him the chip, leaving him with severe stomach pain.
He felt better after they got home, but at 4:30 p.m., as he was about to leave for basketball, his brother called out that he had passed out, she said, according to the website.
Harris was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The family is awaiting the results of the autopsy.
