The Dream Home leaderboard flipped with shock results

It was the second ‘tools down’ moment from the first season of Channel 7’s popular renovation reality show Dream homemarking the first two luxury homes completed.

And this week’s entrants’ results – judged by buyer’s agent Simon Cohen, architect Rosie Morley and Lana Taylor of Three Homes Renovations – turned the competition on its head.

First, the judges turned their attention to Brad and Mel’s house in Northcote, Victoria, judging the three couples who brought the home to life.

The facade created by Taeler and Elle was “flawless”, with the judges calling it the best-looking home on the street.

Specifically, they mentioned the sweet detail of naming the home Harmony, a personal nod that nearly brought homeowner Mel to tears.

“That’s my word!” she said.

Taylor later told producers that hearing Brad and Mel’s joy “almost brought me to tears.”

However, the positive feedback didn’t continue into their second “bubble gum” room, which the judges said “lacked the fun”.

For their efforts, Taeler and Elle received an overall score of 26 out of 30.

Queensland parents of twins Hannah and Jonny were tasked with transforming Brad and Mel’s hallway, upstairs bathroom and one child’s bedroom.

Lana Taylor said the hallway was impressive, but there was “a lot of stuff.”

But Hannah and Johnny had reason to smile, providing a bright bathroom and nailing the bedroom with a creative arch — for a score of 23.5.

The final couple in Brad and Mel’s home were Jacinta and Jordan, who took a gamble this week by focusing on the master bedroom.

Perhaps for that reason, the judges were disappointed with the laundry, confused as to why the couple didn’t continue the style of the nearby kitchen they finished last week.

The judges said the wardrobe was good but lacked the “wow factor”.

But Simon, Rosie and Lana weren’t disappointed for too long, each exclaiming “wow” upon stepping into the master bedroom.

Jacinta and Jordan had used Venetian plaster as a feature wall and curved it over the ceiling.

The judges said that if they were judging just the handyman, the couple would get three tens, but the laundry in particular brought their scores down.

The Sydney couple scored 25.5 out of 30.

Home of Elle’s Watsonia

Rounding the corner to Elle’s home in Watsonia, Melbourne, the judges were instantly blown away by the facade created by Lara and Peter.

Calling it a “Scandinavian ski resort” vibe with an “Australian twist”, the judges said the brief was a success.

Apart from a minor color issue, they couldn’t fault the work.

The praise for Lara and Peter continued into their entrance hall, with the judges admiring the couple’s choice to continue the timber into a large wall.

Lara and Peter scored 26.5 out of 30.

Then it was onto the master bedroom and walk-in closet created by Brad and Mel, which are at the bottom of the chart.

The room was ‘immaculately executed’ and delivered to ‘super luxury’ requirements.

When the Melbourne couple took a gamble and used open cabinets, the judges weren’t concerned, explaining that it added to the luxury feel.

It was a major moment of redemption for Brad and Mel, who received a game-changing score of 25.5 out of 30.

It’s finally time to appreciate the work of traditional brothers Rhys and Liam, who finished last week at the top of the leaderboard, receiving an extra $10,000 in cash and support.

The brothers were confident, especially about their bathroom, and the judges were impressed “from a distance.”

But Rosie Morley said as she inspected the cladding work up close she wasn’t that amazed and said there was a lot going on.

Unlike Brad and Mel, the brothers’ gamble of not putting a door in the room didn’t pay off – and all three judges questioned the decision.

Moving into their next space, the hallway, they wondered if the work was done before they arrived at the office.

Lana Taylor said “it made me feel like the world came crashing down on me” because it was so tight.

The brothers fell out of favor quite a bit, finishing with a score of 20 out of 30.

Dream Home continues on Mondaywhere the couples will be pitted against the two Queensland homes of Hannah, Jonny and Liam.

The episode airs on Channel 7 and 7plus on Mondays at 7.30pm AEST.
