Local footy’s longest active losing streak ends as Western Rams celebrate 177-point win over North Sunshine
Western Aries Football The club celebrated their first win in six years on Saturday – and did it in style.
The Western Football Netball League Division Two side crushed North Sunshine by 177 points in a drought-breaking bloodbath at Ian Cowie Recreation Reserve.
It’s their first win since 2018, so it’s no surprise that some players weren’t entirely sure of the words to the team song after the game.

“It was a great thing to hear but it was a bit funny, half the guys didn’t know the lyrics so we were just making it up as we went along,” Rams president Luke Roberts told 7NEWS on Sunday.
“Some people were saying Rockbank, some were saying Western Rams and some people were just muttering – it was great.”
The club was previously known as Rockbank until rebranding in 2021, at the height of their losing streak.
The Rams’ win snaps the homegrown player’s longest active losing streak at 2,240 days and 78 games.
“I’m very hungover at the moment, I slept for about an hour on someone else’s sofa and I don’t know what day it is – so it was a great night,” said Roberts.
The win moves the Rams up to 12th in the WFNL standings, above North Sunshine and Tarneit.
They led by 98 points at halftime and held North Sunshine scoreless until a more even third quarter.
But the scoreline blew up again in the final quarter as the game finished 29.24 (198) to 4.3 (27).
Rams captain Ryan Tyson said the feeling was surreal.
“Everybody was pumped up, excited – it was like a grand final,” he said.
Assistant coach Bernie Griffiths said it was even emotional.
“There were players with tears in their eyes,” he told 7NEWS. “It just meant so much to so many people.”
Losing so many games so badly makes it difficult to sell the club, but Roberts is confident Saturday’s win will be one of many to come.
“You know when you’re in a league where you’re always losing by more than 200 points, it’s pretty hard to keep players,” he said. “If this is the start of something big then it’s going to be amazing because we’ve put in the hard yards.”
