But because there are no signs indicating restrictions, people are free to park their caravans, boats or cars there as much as they like – even if they don’t live near St Kilda.
According to the locals, some of the caravans are parked on the street all winter.
“None of them live locally,” St Kilda East resident Brian Murray said.
“I guess they don’t want to park in front of their own house and clog up their own street, so they fill up ours.”
Street dwellers are increasingly frustrated to come home to find there are no parking spaces left in front of their homes.
Council candidate and St Kilda East resident Justin Halliday said the parking problem was causing a host of other problems, including vehicle dumping and littering, as well as crime.
“We’re seeing a lot of neighborhood street crime where people have their license plates and things stolen from their cars,” he said.
Across Victoria, the same parking rules apply to a caravan or boat that can be left on the street if there are no restrictions, it is under 7.5m long and weighs under 4.5 tonnes.
Residents have petitioned Port Phillip City Council to limit parking in the parking zone to four hours during the day.
Mayor Heather Cunsolo told 7NEWS councilors have heard residents’ concerns and will vote on a motion to investigate the matter this week.
